What’s the point of adventure?

19th century mystic Sri Kamakrishna once said, “Do not seek enlightenment unless you seek it as the man whose hair is on fire seeks the pond.” So I’ll refrain here from trying to make sense of the adventure drive – no anecdotes drawing connections between challenge and satisfaction; no essays muddling through the allure of discovery. I’m just not up to the commitment.

I’ll opt, instead, to head for the mountains. The deer, elk, bears and wolves do a pretty good job of going full tilt. Maybe I can learn a thing or two about it from them. Maybe I’ll even catch my hair afire. After all, thinking through my boots has a way of facilitating inspiration if not exactly insight.

And at the very least, I know that, out there, I’ll get to brush elbows with some of the primary questions – the mysteries drawing me off the couch in the first place.

I’ll trade that for answers any day.
